Starfield is Not Just a "Reskin" of Skyrim, Says Head of Xbox Game Studios

November has entered its second week. The leaves are changing, the days are getting shorter, and the stress of the holiday season is beginning to wear on our nerves. But do you feel like something is missing this year?

Yes, Bethesda's space RPG Starfield. Originally scheduled to be released this week, Friday 11/11/22, Starfield's release has unfortunately been pushed back to 2023. On the plus side, if you can't play it this week, you can still get in on the buzz.

Via GameSpot (opens in a new tab): Here's Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, interviewed recently for the podcast Friends Per Second (opens in a new tab), featured on Skillup's YouTube channel (opens in a new tab) Booty answered questions about Halo, Game Pass, the management of the Microsoft-owned game studio, and finally answered a question about the space RPG that Bethesda is delaying development on.

After noting that the reception to the Starfield trailer has been generally positive, Ralph Panebianco of SkillUp said that others see it as just "Skyrim in space."

"Do you think it's a space Skyrim? Panebianco asks. If not "Skyrim in Space," what do you think makes it stand out? Where do you see the Bethesda Game Studios model evolving?

"Over the last year and a half, I've had the opportunity to spend more time with Todd Howard and see how he works and what he brings to game design. Because his way of doing things is not to reskin something," Booty said.

"The first thing that excites me is the visual style; it's a look inspired by the retro concept art of science fiction from the 70s and 80s." He went on to list several of Starfield's systems, including ship building, space combat, and planetary exploration. Booty said, "I think there's a lot of new stuff in this game that Bethesda fans and Todd Howard fans haven't seen before."

At the end of the interview, Panebianco casually asks for a release date for Starfield. In other words, someday someone might slip up and let it slip out. Says Panebianco."

Unfortunately, Booty just laughs. 'No 3/3/23. 'No 4/4/24. So at least two dates can be ruled out for sure.
