Death Stranding Celebrates Third Birthday and 10 Million Sales

"Death Stranding" officially celebrates its third anniversary, but on PlayStation 4. Director Hideo Kojima revealed that the epic adventure has sold 10 million copies.

This number includes the original version of Death Stranding for PlayStation 4 and PC, the director's cut version for PlayStation 5 and PC, and downloads sold through PlayStation Plus and PC Game Pass, among several different releases. Either way, this is definitely a major milestone and a number worth celebrating, and it's no surprise that the game, which was named PC Gamer's Game of the Year for 2020 (open in new tab), has reached so many people.

Aside from our own "Death Stranding" review (opens in new tab), which scored a respectable 85, the long-term impact of Norman Reedus and his weird backpack baby still remains. Notably, the game was released on consoles only a few months before that global situation, and the PC version was released right in the middle of it. Rich Stanton writes that the game unwittingly amplified many of the emotions felt during the long shutdown (opens in new tab).

Hideo Kojima was excited about reaching the milestone, tweeting (opens in new tab): "It makes me happy to think that there are over 10 million 'Same One' (players) all over the world, all loosely connected." Publisher 505 Games also applauded Kojima and his studio (opens in new tab), calling it an "incredible feat" and "congratulations from the entire team at 505 Games." Tommy Earl Jenkins, who did the motion capture and voice for "Die Hard Man," posted a behind-the-scenes photo to celebrate the anniversary." Introduced to the world three years ago, it changed my life," he tweeted. 'I am forever grateful for the gift of Die Hard Man and all the wonderful friends I have made along the way. Keep up the good work."

Norman Reedus almost admitted earlier this year that a Death Stranding sequel (open in new tab) is in the works. This is not the only game Kojima is working on. What we now know about is a partnership with Xbox (opens in new tab), possibly "Overdose," a game that may have been leaked by the man in the upper half of his body in early November. There's also the game he's been endlessly teasing since September, a game starring Elle Fanning (opens in new tab). According to our in-house Kojima expert Rich, it is likely to be Death Stranding 2, but it could also be something else entirely. Oh, my head hurts too.
