Microsoft May Place Ads in Windows 11 Start Menu

Microsoft has introduced more ads and pop-ups on a trial basis through insider builds of Windows 11, and while these may change, Microsoft may decide in the final version of the upcoming Windows 11 update to keep these somewhat may decide to keep the intrusive features.

It pains me to say it, but yes, we may end up with even more ads built into the operating system, and Windows insiders are reporting that preview builds of Windows 11 (not development or beta builds, but perhaps less stable Canary) have spotted the ads and warned of their appearance (via Windows Latest (opens in new tab))

The ads in question include a "complete your profile" notification, a "sign up for a Microsoft account" suggestion, and a OneDrive alert that prompts to back up files. These are displayed at the top of the session flyout (the small menu that appears when you click on your user profile to lock or sign out of your session).

To be honest, I was trying to figure out how to stop OneDrive from automatically running out of cloud storage every time I signed in to my new machine this morning for testing. As if lock screen tips, service promotions in File Explorer, and recommended apps weren't enough to annoy me, some of them are even pre-downloaded, pinned to the Start Menu, and impossible to uninstall (I'm looking at you Xbox Game Bar )

Sure, these little notifications may be useful for first-time PC users, but anyone who has been using a PC for more than a few years will probably find them annoying. Worst of all, there appears to be no way to turn off the ads.

I really think the world is going to end this week after McDonald's McLispy gaming chairs (opens in new tab). But hey, at least the sky isn't filled with ads yet. Oh, wait. (Open in new tab)

Just remember, Windows 11 allows you to roll back to Windows 10 (open in new tab), but you're likely missing a window at this point.
