New Anti-Toxicity Tool in Modern Warfare 2 Is 'Fundamental' to CoD's Future

Activision Blizzard detailed the new anti-poisoning feature introduced in Modern Warfare II, calling it "the foundation for future Call of Duty titles. Essentially, it combines a revamped in-game reporting system with new tools for publishers' moderation teams to deal with problem players.

As an example, if a player is "identified as having offensive voice chat," Activision Blizzard can "globally mute" that player "from all voice chat features in the game. The same can be applied to offensive use of in-game chat, with players who repeatedly send offensive messages simply being locked out of the system. These tools will be included in Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 at launch.

The new reporting system allows players to choose from a variety of canned options (e.g., "text chat: aggressive"), but also to provide context to their reports, as "situations in the game are not always uniform," according to Activision Blizzard. An optional dialog box allows the player to provide a specific reason for filing a complaint, which will be viewed by the moderation team.

As before, this comes with a code of conduct, which players must agree to in order to play "Call of Duty" titles. The three headline principles are: treat everyone with respect, fight with integrity, and be vigilant. This sentence first appeared in the Modern Warfare 2 beta, and whenever a player tries to enter a new multiplayer playlist for the first time, they are prompted to sign up. It forces Activision Blizzard to say "I read it" and act accordingly.

"Eliminating toxicity is an ongoing effort," Activision Blizzard's statement concludes. We look forward to moving forward together on this front as we continue the fight to make Call of Duty fair and enjoyable for all."
