Dark Souls Remastered Back Online After 9 Months

Hoar to the Sun! The Dark Souls trilogy is finally back online. After more than nine months of inactivity, From Software has finally resumed online functionality for Dark Souls Remastered.

The game, along with Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls 3, had their PvP servers suspended in January for the PC version. This was due to the discovery of a serious security vulnerability in "Dark Souls 3," which could have allowed malicious code to be executed through online features. It took a full four months for From Software to finally announce that the servers would be restored "sequentially" starting with the third game in the trilogy, and then it took a full four months to hear more news.

Three months later, Dark Souls 3 was finally restored. At the time, From Software stated that they were working to "bring back these features in all other 'Dark Souls' titles. Unfortunately, when "Dark Souls 2" was resurrected in October, the developer revealed that one original "Dark Souls" game would be left behind: the Prepare to Die Edition, which found that the system supporting online functionality was "aging" and and was immediately crossed off From Software's to-do list.

"Dark Souls" was left behind: Remastered, and the developer's nine-month journey of squashing security vulnerabilities and reviving the game was over. From Software briefly tweeted their final victory: "Thanks again for your patience, understanding and support.

It's wild that it took almost the entire year 2022 to restore three of the four disabled games. But at least Dark Souls players now have the freedom to invade, summon, and slam cheeky (and sometimes largely useless) messages into their favorite games to annoy and amuse their peers, PtDE excluded.
