Forza Horizon 5 Update Slows PC Performance and Offers New Ways to Improve It

Forza Horizon 5 supports both Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR 2.2 with the latest update. The donut media update brings new story content and cars to the game, but importantly, it provides new ways to maximize fps.

Nvidia's DLSS support brings a healthy performance boost for those using Nvidia graphics cards (the majority of PC gamers today). Depending on the version, DLSS tends to handle motion relatively well; Forza's latest update integrates version 2.4.12 (opens in new tab), which is just okay.

Nvidia's DLAA (Deep Learning Anti Aliasing) will also be added to the game with the Donut Media update. It uses a deep learning engine to improve visuals in the same way as DLSS, but instead of increasing resolution, it uses this ability to reduce the jaggedness of the final image.

But the most interesting aspect here is AMD's upscaling technology, which is a completely new version of FSR 2.2. Not only is this set to an algorithm that improves upscaling capabilities, which should mean sharper images, but this technology can be used on most modern graphics cards, regardless of manufacturer. Basically, if you have an Nvidia GPU, try both DLSS and FSR 2.2 and see which look you like best.

AMD also talks a bit about what's coming in the next big version of FSR, FSR 3 (open in new tab), which AMD says will have some frame generation built in and will have up to a 2x performance improvement over FSR 2. Nevertheless, little is known beyond the vague release date of 2023.

For those who want to kill the frame rate instead, there are also two new ray tracing modes, "Ultra" and "Extreme." Raytracing has already provided gorgeous close-ups of cars in the game since launch, and now it will be possible to extend such attractive player car reflections to free-roam, photo mode, and even during actual races.

There is a handy table that shows when and how ray tracing is enabled by the selections in the settings menu, so keep that in mind if you want to up the ante.

Sounds pretty loaded if you ask me, but if you just got the RTX 4090 (opens in new tab), you need something to make you sweat. Owners of this high-end card will be pleased to know that "Forza" now recognizes its power and automatically sets the graphics quality to "Extreme". Previously, "Low" was the default.

The update (opens in new tab) is now available for download and apparently requires about 10.9 GB total on my machine.
