'Guild Wars 2' ad pokes fun at WoW dragon riders - "Why wait to ride the dragon?

ArenaNet is trying one thing to lure people into MMOs. Specifically, the new ad jokingly tells people that the dragons in Guild War 2 are better than those in World of Warcraft.

While World of Warcraft is not specifically mentioned, it is clear that the ad has the expanded Dragonflight in mind: in the short 30-second video, a Sky Scale mount appears in a myriad of different skins, and the game's other mount type, the Griffon also makes an appearance: "Why wait to ride the dragon? That's a bit of a cheeky question, considering how long it takes to actually unlock the Sky Scale. It's a fairly long quest, taking at least four days, which in MMO time is almost nothing, but still requires a fair amount of dedication and materials. Then again, even if you meet the prerequisite of reaching max level and unlocking all of Living World Season 4. It's a lot of work.

Ironically, as many have pointed out in their subreddit posts, the chances of getting a dragon-themed mount in World of Warcraft before Guild Wars 2 are much higher. The game has a handful of dragon mounts that are available as soon as you unlock flight at level 30. These regular flying mounts are different from Dragonflight's drakes, but are still very dragon.

However, I don't think ArenaNet's intent is to draw people in with dragons alone. The ad is a lighthearted way to poke fun at its competitors by focusing on a common feature. This is the first time a developer has pointed out the similarity in style to the dragons in World of Warcraft, but Editor-in-Chief Phil Savage noticed it earlier this year when he wrote about the new Dragonfight mount. He noted, however, that while there is a lot of mechanical overlap, they are not identical.
