'Modern Warfare 2' Players Enthusiastic About New Anti-Camping Tool

Let me first say that I enjoy camping immensely. Both in terms of real life "back to nature" and in the context of multiplayer shooters. From a personal perspective, the advent of drill charges (open in new tab) in Modern Warfare 2 is not great. But for players who hate campers and want to eradicate them - most players, that is - it is a godsend.

The drill charge is essentially a high-fire charge with a thermal lance attached, allowing it to dive into or penetrate surfaces before exploding. It sounds like the sort of thing that would take time and careful effort to set up, and it would in reality. But in "Modern Warfare 2," you can simply roll it up and throw it, just like a traditional hand grenade. It hits, it sticks, it digs, and it blows up.

What this means practically is that if an enemy in a good hiding spot or a hard-to-reach spot is frustrating you to the point of distraction, you can turn the tables by throwing this against an adjacent wall, ceiling or floor. If your aim is on target, the result is one of two things: either the camper will be blown away by the blast, or it will be quickly washed away by the threat (the drill charge will give you ample notice that it is approaching, with both a UI warning and an audio signal). Either way, the camper's problem is solved.

The following video shows Drill Charge in action: Modern Warfare maestro Morgan encounters an opposing player, opens fire, and then retreats behind a wall. Instead of chasing after him, Morgan throws a drill charge at the wall.

Drill charges can also be thrown ridiculously far (open in new tab), and if attached to a vehicle, they can kill anyone who doesn't run away before they explode. Very useful.

Morgan is not the only one who sees great utility in this high-fired hole maker; TylerNY315, in a Reddit (opens in new tab) tribute to the drill charge, wrote, "I don't know if this is "innovative". I get multiple kills on the camper every match, and each one puts a smile on my face."

"I've seen how new equipment can go incredibly wrong, like the incendiary grenades in the Vanguard, but I think the Drill Charge is a real game changer, well done IW.

Others were quick to voice their agreement. 'It's amazing what you can do camping in a little room with only one entrance. You just throw them against any wall you can find and just kill them," writes wulv8022 (opens in new tab). "For example, at Embassy B or A Flag Domination. I just go to the other side of the wall next to them and throw a drill charge. I shoot those who run away and those who stay there get blown up."

"No matter how thick you throw it at the wall, it will go out the other side, so don't be afraid to play with it even if you think it can't work," added RunTheFrames (opens in new tab).

"Drill Charge is the best feature added to CoD in a long time.

"You can even throw mf from under them, bro," wrote _IratePirate_ (open in new tab)." If you know their general area, throw from their lower floors and just go about your business so that your kills are delivered to you overnight."

Here it is.

Here's a good example of that particular tactic:

Making the drill charge even more useful, it not only sticks to walls, floors, and other inanimate objects: it also sticks to humans like a headcrab grenade. Once again, our Morgan is making enemy players look like tactical response clowns:

But the real magic of the drill charge is not what you do, but how you do it. One of the reasons I enjoy camping is the anger it makes me feel toward other players: they can't see me, and even if they could, they can't reach me. Meanwhile, I'm cracking my skull open like an overripe pimple. By allowing players to force campers out of their lairs from a relatively safe position, the drill charge reverses the position, and non-campers like it.

"Bruh, I had a riot shield guy camped with a teammate right behind him, so the shield guy spotted, then the other guy stepped out. I got the shooter stuck with a drill charge and killed them both." It was probably the most satisfying thing I've ever done.
