Parasite Eve Rumors Are Actually Terrible Square Enix NFT's, and Fans Are Angry

A few weeks ago, Square Enix trademarked the word "symbiosis" in Japan. The definition of the word is based on the 1995 classic "Parasite Eve," and the publicity surrounding the imminent announcement of a remake of the game was lively.

Oh, how foolish of us to put our faith in Square Enix in the year of our lord 2022! This is not a remake of Parasite Eve, because it is not a remake of Parasite Eve. Instead, the publisher has announced a new "collectible art" NFT project. In a 30-second trailer backed by a deafening insert song, Square Enix proudly proclaims that it will "unravel the story" before revealing the project's logo and release date, Spring 2023.

Not surprisingly, the announcement went down like a lead balloon. Square Enix replied with some great memes of the right proportions, which were quickly tucked away in my personal folder, ready to be used the next time Square announces some bullshit. Aside from the fact that most people understand how awful the NFT is (both conceptually and environmentally), it seems like a strong slap in the face to excited "Parasite Eve" fans.

It is unclear if the so-called "art" project has anything to do with the series, but for the sake of Parasite Eve fans, we hope not. The dedicated Twitter page promotes it as a "new franchise" and it is unlikely to be related to the game. For now, though, sit back, relax, and enjoy the Twitter replies that thoroughly condemn the publisher's terrible decision. Popcorn at the ready.

Square Enix's adherence to the NFT has been a strange and frustrating path. The company's president remained enthusiastic about the concept, even though he was aware that "those who 'play for fun' (open in new tab) and who now form the majority of players" hated NFT. Square Enix joined the blockchain (opens in new tab) in September, and he continued to promote the awful scenario (opens in new tab) until 2022. It is disheartening to see a once highly reputable developer fall so far. Especially when they are cutting out so many Western studios and series in pursuit of crap.
