Disney's Dreamlight Valley "fixes" Moana's dress, making her look nothing like Moana.

Earlier this week, Gameloft pushed a confusing "bug fix" for Disney's Dreamlight Valley (opens in new tab), making a major change to the final reward given by Moana, Princess of the Sea.

Each character in Disney's Animal Crossing has their own unique rewards that can be earned by gradually leveling up their friendship meter. Moana is no different, and when her friendship meter is maxed out, she receives a dress similar to the one Moana herself wears. With its red bandeau and layered tan skirt, it is obvious which character and film it represents.

However, the dress no longer shares Moana's iconic color scheme. At the bottom of the list of bug fixes in the game's October 31 update (open in new tab) is one odd change: "The item colors for Moana's level 10 friendship items have been replaced with their original color scheme." This is a bit odd, given that the colors of the old dress seemed quite intended. Instead, fans who logged in were confused to discover that the ruffle pattern in the middle of the skirt had completely disappeared and the dress had been changed to a bright blue color.

The change caused a bit of a stir in the Dreamlight Valley community. Over 1,500 comments were posted on a thread on the game's Discord server asking the developers to reinstate the pre-patch dress. 'This is hideous. I don't know how you can say these are the original colors." Nothing Moana is wearing is blue and Elsa already has a blue dress." Another joked that it looked like Gameloft had "adjusted the shades with a slider bar" and added: "I don't get it. The colors matched Moana perfectly. What's the real reason?"

Reddit also made fun of the change, with one post comparing it to the infamous blue and gold dress fiasco in 2015. In a post about the change, more fans expressed their frustration (opens in new tab)." This is BS. I don't care if these are the "original colors" and have been "corrected." This is nothing like the dress worn by anyone in Moana. This is just an excuse to charge for a dress that looks like the actual Moana and it pisses me off. We got that dress."

Concerns about it becoming a paid item have been expressed on both the game's subreddit and the Discord server. Currently, the game must be purchased, but Gameloft intends to move it to free-to-play when it exits Early Access next year. With that change, we can probably expect something like a pay-what-you-can cosmetics store, and many worry that the original Dress will end up there.

It certainly seems like an odd change, especially when both pattern and color are being changed. One worries that Gameloft will later put this dress in a store that sells premium currency. Fans in particular already feel cheated. Gameloft did not respond to my request for comment, but I will update if the developer provides any explanation.
