Warren Spector's Next Immersive Sim Will Be Multiplayer

We told you in March that Warren Spector, the famous producer of "System Shock," "Crusader," and "Deus Ex," was back at it again with an immersive sim: Today we have more details. Today we have more details: the title is "Argos": the title is "Argos: Riders on the Storm" and it will be multiplayer.

"From the creative mind of Warren Spector comes a new game set in an alien yet strangely familiar world," says the Otherside Entertainment website (opens in new tab). Like Warren's earlier work in the immersive simulation genre, this world offers players the chance to "choose their play style."

"But be aware that the choices you make, large or small, have consequences and directly affect your experience. You can even team up with friends to weave a unique story that is different from other players."

The website unfortunately does not provide any further details, but there is a logo, so there must be something there.

The multiplayer angle is new, not only for Spector, but for immersive sims in general, which tend to be single-player experiences. That's what attracted him to the idea in the first place.

"I'm a relentless advocate of immersive sims," Spector told IGN (opens in new tab). 'What's the next step for immersive sims? I think I've figured it out ... It's about time we tried multiplayer."

Specter also said that the company is "looking forward to the next step in the development of immersive sims.

Later in the interview, Spector said that the multiplayer component would work on a relatively small scale, rather than with dozens or hundreds of players running around simultaneously. Considering how difficult it is to successfully run multiplayer in an immersive sim, this is understandable and perhaps inevitable. The multiplayer in "System Shock 2" is a good example: it was fun, but it was also a gong show, with hackers and OSA agents trying to professionally advance the game while gun-crazed Marines ran around blowing up everything in sight. Definitely not one for the pickup game.

The spiritual successor to the great "Ultima Underworld" game, Otherside's "Underworld Ascendant" (open in new tab), was an unadorned disaster when it was released in 2018, but Spector has been a great advocate for "Argos" Very High Aspirations: Riders on the Storm If people want "unique and innovative," even I would look at what we're doing and think it's crazy," he says. 'The team is accomplishing more than I could ever ask for.'
