Overwatch 2's Newest Hero is a Transformable Tank That "Makes You Want to Run Away"

The newest hero of Overwatch 2 (opens in new tab) was unveiled at the Overwatch League (opens in new tab) Grand Finals.

Ramattra debuted at Overwatch 1's 2019 Storm Rising PvE event. He appeared at the end of the ending cinematic, talking with his now fellow tank hero Doomfist. Since then, not much has been heard about the leader of Null Sector, not even his name. He joins the tank pool, which revolves around the fact that Kit has two separate forms.

The Omnic form has a slimmer build, like Ramatra's DPS hero. He employs more of a thrusting strategy with this form, and lead hero designer Alec Dawson told the press in a group interview that the Omnic Form is better suited for protecting teammates at long range. With the push of a button, the Lamatra can transform into its larger, creepier Nemesis Form, and Lead Narrative Designer Gavin Jurgens-Fyfry doesn't want players to be any less threatened by it. He said, "It would be hard to overestimate how scary the Ramatras are when they are in Nemesis form.

Nemesis mode is all about rushing, switching from shooting to a close-range brawling style: "You knock down the enemy, rush in, punch your way around to the back of the line, and try to exploit their skids," says Dawson.

The Nemesis form makes the Ramatras "one of the biggest targets on the battlefield," so when facing them on the enemy team, abilities like Ana's Sleep Dart and Zenyatta's Discord Orb should come into great use. He will also be very fearsome as he rushes forward with his fists in the air; Dawson has not yet mentioned exactly what Ramattra's ultimate ability will be, but he did clarify that one ability will be shared between the two forms and that "when he uses it you will want to get away from him."

Lore nerds will be pleased to know that there is a lot going on between Ramattra and Zenyatta as well." They got along like brothers," Jurgens-Fyhrie told me. Those "hungry for the legend of Zenyatta" will have a great time with the addition of Lamatra.

The not-so-happy news is that there are currently no plans to move up access to the hero on the Battle Pass, and players on the free course will need to reach tier 55 to unlock him. While this is an unfortunate choice, art director Dion Rogers said that shaping the positioning of the hero with the Battle Pass is a "constant conversation for the team."

The Ramatras seem to be a pretty formidable foe, and it will take a bit of skill to know which form is best for which situation. As a support main, I look forward to seeing how he can lead his team on the battlefield, and especially as a Zenyatta main, I look forward to hearing all the nuggets of lore between the two characters. Ramatola will join the lineup at the beginning of Season 2, which kicks off on December 6.
