Writer of "Disco Elysium" sues developer ZA/UM

Earlier this month, Martin Luiga (founding member of Studio ZA/UM and developer of PC Gamer favorite "Disco Elysium") announced the "dissolution of the ZA/UM Cultural Association." He said that the company as a cultural project "no longer represents the founding principles," adding that artist Alexander Rostov and writers Helen Hindpere and Robert Kulwitz have "reluctantly" left the company. In a subsequent interview, Luiga said that the three were "fired on false premises" and suggested that legal action against ZA/UM was forthcoming.

Now, as TechNewsSpace reports, it appears that this is indeed the case. As noted on the Estonian Ministry of Justice website Riigi Teataja, writer Kulvitz has filed a lawsuit against ZA/UM on behalf of his company Telomer OÜ.

The application now seeks to "obtain information and review documents" from Disco Elysium Studios. So far, the exact nature of the lawsuit is not known, but it may be related to the wrongful termination that Ruiga previously claimed. It could also be an attempt to regain the rights to Disco Elysium from the shareholders, especially since Kulwitz has spent over a decade developing the Elysium world.

This seems to be confirmed by Mr. Luiga. He posted a link to a TechNewsSpace article and cheekily wrote only "law-jaw" about a game he was involved in producing. He also thanked several fans in his reply, and when asked if he could offer any support, he replied, "I will let you know if such an opportunity arises."

The first hearing will take place on November 28, and hopefully the details of the lawsuit will become clearer. The trial may reveal what happened at the end of 2021; ZA/UM issued a very vague no comment earlier this month, saying it could not go into details because Luiga is under NDA; Rostov and Hindpere have also remained silent, along with Kurvitz have stated that they are still working on the game, but that Luiga believes "the three of them will continue to make the game."
