Fallout 4 to receive free 4K update next year

Amidst the grand celebration of the 25th anniversary of the original Fallout, Bethesda announced that Fallout 4 will receive a free "next-gen update (opens in new tab)" in 2023.

Details are scarce, but Bethesda says the update will include "performance mode features for higher frame rates, quality features for 4K resolution gameplay, bug fixes, and even bonus content for the Creation Club." It will also be released for the Xbox Series X-S and PlayStation 5 consoles.

While some "Fallout" fans may bemoan the fact that Bethesda is focusing on incremental updates for the slightly newer technology of "Fallout 4" rather than making "Fallout 5," there is a bright side: rather than making Fallout 5, While some may lament Bethesda's focus on incremental updates for Fallout 4's slightly newer technology, there's a bright side. It could be quite a lot of people: remember, Fallout 4 is already seven years old and is, in video game terms, an "eon."

One thing Fallout fans are wondering is whether (or rather, how) this update will affect Fallout 4 mods; we've reached out to Bethesda to see if they can tell us anything in this regard and will update if we hear back .

Bethesda has said that today's announcement marks the end of the Fallout anniversary festivities, so I guess that means no surprise announcement of a new Obsidian-made Fallout game. However, there is still a chance to get free "Fallout 76" and "Fallout 3" rewards and bundles from the Epic Games Store (opens in new tab).
