Terraria becomes first indie title to surpass 1 million user reviews on Steam

We liked Terraria so much that we reviewed it twice, once when it was new in 2011 (open in new tab) and again in 2018 (open in new tab).In case that wasn't enough proof of Terraria's quality and durability, Terraria is now on Steam with over 1 million positive user reviews, making it the first indie game to achieve this feat.

One of the main reasons for Terraria's enduring popularity is undoubtedly the developer Re-Logic's constant support for the game and its players. Its "final" update (opens in new tab) was released in May 2020, nine years after the game's original release, followed by another "actual final update" (opens in new tab) in October, and more updates in 2021. 2022 saw more updates, with the latest update being less than a month old (opens in new tab). At this point, I don't think anyone expects any of these updates to be the end of the road.

Terraria co-creator Andrew Spinks also got credit from gamers in early 2021 when he told Stadia to "get bent" (opens in new tab) after his Google account was disabled and he no longer received support. This decision was eventually overturned (open in new tab), but it did not matter much in the end anyway, as Stadia subsequently collapsed.

To be clear, Terraria is not the first game to achieve one million positive user reviews, but it is something of the first "indie darling" to do so. Games that preceded it on the list include Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (5.9 million positive user reviews), PUBG: Battlegrounds (1.2 million), Dota 2 (1.5 million), and Grand Theft Auto 5 (1.2 million), among others.

What makes this accomplishment particularly impressive, however, is that these positive user reviews are juxtaposed with just over 22,000 negative reviews, which, in Steam fashion, are "overwhelmingly positive," with 97% of overall user ratings. Only one of the top five games maintains this standard: CS:GO, Dota 2, and GTA5 are all "very positive," while PUBG Battlegrounds is "mixed."
