New Marvel Card Game Kills Uncle Ben to Get Spider-Man.

Marvel Snap is a new free card game set in the world of everyone's favorite superheroes, and it has quite a pedigree behind it. The game was developed by former Hearthstone director Ben Broad's studio Second Dinner Studios

and is currently available on mobile and PC. Aiming for a short, action-packed Hearthstone-like match experience, matches end quickly, play a lot, and give you extras.

One element of Marvel Snap, however, immediately caught our attention. Lord knows who needs to hear Spider-Man's origin story at this point, but in almost every story, Peter Parker makes an initially selfish use of his powers before letting a thief escape. This thief then goes on to kill Uncle Ben, and upon apprehending him, Spider-Man realizes, to his horror, that he has great power. [The death of his beloved uncle proves to be the driving force behind the young Spider-Man character. This is now reflected in Uncle Ben's card in Marvel Snap, which uses a fairly common CCG mechanism.

Thus, Uncle Ben is a 1-cost minion with the text "When this card is destroyed, put Spider-Man into your hand." This means that you can place Uncle Ben early on and wipe him off the board as quickly as possible to get a more powerful Spider-Man card.

I'm not sure if this is funny, cool, or just another "press F for respect" moment. On the one hand, video games lend themselves to this silly aspect of comics, with all the characters constantly dying and coming back to life. On the other, I've never seen Uncle Ben's role in the Spider-Man mythos spelled out so clearly.

It's hilarious. Or, at least, it's a weird old card: apparently Marvel Snap is pretty great at this otherwise. What's especially odd is that with cards like this, it usually combos with a card that can destroy it: in this case, Carnage. The first season of this game is Spider-Man-themed, and it's peculiar and odd that you could theoretically run a deck that plays a bit of Spider-Man's origin when setting it up.Marvel Snap can be tried here.
