CD Projekt's first title, "The Witcher," is being fully remade.

The Witcher (opens in new tab), the RPG that made CD Projekt a household name in 2007, is getting a remake. The studio announced today that the remake will be "built from the ground up with Unreal Engine 5.

"The Witcher is where it all began for us at CD Projekt Red," said studio head Adam Badowski (opens in new tab). It was the first game we made and it was a big deal for us at the time. We feel it's just as big, if not bigger, to come back to this place and remake the game for the next generation of gamers to experience."

The remake is being developed by Fool's Theory, the Polish studio that developed "Seven: The Days Long Gone" (open in new tab), and CD Projekt will be " complete creative supervision"; Fool's Theory CEO Jakub Rokosz was previously a quest designer for The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3.

"Working with Fool's Theory is exciting because we have people who have worked on The Witcher games before. They know the original, they know how long gamers have been waiting for a remake, and they know how to make an incredibly ambitious game." And while it will take some time before they are ready to share more about and from the game, I am confident that it will be worth the wait.

The original Witcher was an outstanding RPG, but it was also quite quirky in some notable ways. The best example is the combat, where rhythmic mouse clicks simulate smooth, fluid swordplay. I liked this system once I got used to it, but some players struggled with it because it was so different from other skill-based or click-click combat systems. [I also expect that the in-game cards (relics from very different eras and cultures) that Geralt was able to collect to compete for scores with the attractive women in the game will be gone.

CD Projekt confirmed that the Witcher remake is Canis Majoris, one of two spin-off games announced earlier this month (open in new tab). No further details were given: on Twitter, CD Projekt said,

"We want to do this right, so please be patient."
