Outrun Ferrari to be auctioned.

General
Outrun Ferrari to be auctioned.

The good-natured auctioneer R.M. Sotheby's is no stranger to big-ticket items, and this November it will be offering an extraordinary car in London: a 1990 Ferrari Testarossa Pininfarina Spider "Special Production Car." This is not your daddy's car.

In fact, this car is so rare and unusual that the Sotheby's listing of the car has to be read almost inaudibly. The history of this car will be discussed later, but it is important for geeks to know that this is the exact Ferrari model that inspired the design of the car in the arcade classic "Outrun" by Hiroshi Suzuki and AM2. The game was released in 1986, the same year Ferrari produced its only Spider Testarossa.

And someone at Sotheby's seems to know about the golden age of video games. That's because in addition to the usual sales materials, the auction house produced a video showcasing this stunning car. The message of the ad seems pretty clear: drive this car tremendously fast, illegally, and leave the police siren far behind. It doesn't matter if an oncoming car comes along!

Out-run fantasies aside, the history of this car reads like a movie script. In the world of collector cars, with the right status and a bank balance to back it up, almost anything is possible." Yes, I'm rich, too, go ahead, Sotheby's.

"Behind doors that even the most astute collector might struggle to unlock, cars that were considered too wild for mainstream production are built, bespoke projects born from imagination come to life. Perhaps one of the greatest examples of a collector's vision becoming reality is this striking and rare Pininfarina drop-top, which represents the peak of 1980s excess."

In other words, this is more than just a sexy red car. It is one of only seven custom Testarossa Spyders ever built by Italian coachbuilder Pininfarina, each finished in its own unique way. Originally ordered by Bruneian royalty, this particular car has never been registered for public road use and has only 413 kilometers on the odometer. Such is the fate of these dream machines in their life in a garage.

Or so it has been. First the convertible hood was restored and repainted at the Pininfarina factory in Cambiano, then the interior was refreshed. Then a mechanical overhaul was performed to bring it back to "like-new" condition.

Or, as Sotheby's puts it, this is "a fascinating piece of automotive history, worthy of "unicorn" status in certain car enthusiast circles." It is an outlander. It's frighteningly attractive, illegally fast, and seems like blue sky come true. The car goes on sale November 5 and is estimated to fetch between 1.4 and 1.8 million pounds. Hey, I'll give you 50 pounds. Final offer
