GOG presents free games for Halloween

Genesis Alpha One is a roguelike FPS in which you build, maintain, and navigate a ship in the galaxy. As I mentioned in my 59% review (opens in new tab), the game had some interesting ideas, but failed to put them together in an interesting and compelling way It never did. It has been updated many times since then, and I don't know how much it has improved, but now would be a great time to get to know it, as it is free on GOG's Hallo (opens in new tab) w (opens in new tab) een Sale (opens in new tab). [In a near future ravaged by war, corrupt regimes, and devastating pollution, an influential corporation has created the Genesis Project in a last-ditch attempt to save humanity. As captain of a Genesis starship, you travel into uncharted space for the ultimate mission. Build and manage your spaceship, mine resources, deal with a terrifying alien invasion, clone organisms, and explore the vastness of randomly generated space.

Incidentally, this is the deluxe version of Genesis Alpha One (opens in a new tab), which includes the base game plus the artbook, soundtrack, and Rocket Star Corporation DLC. And very generally, people seem to like the game: the overall rating on GOG is 3.8/5, and user reviews on Steam are "mostly favorable."

The Genesis Alpha One freebie is not the only freebie taking place on GOG. The Halloween sale itself is also taking place, with Cyberpunk 2077 (opens in new tab) at half price, Disco Elysium (opens in new tab) at 75% off, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition (opens in new tab) at 60% off, Prey Digital Deluxe (opens in a new tab) is $10, and so on, which is quite a bargain.

What I like best about GOG's sales are always the really cheap ones, but this time they are in the "Sweet Treats" category, with discounts of at least 89%: $2 for Memoria (opens in a new tab), Styx: Master of Shadows (opens in a new tab) 2; "Edna and Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes" (open in new tab), $2; "Leisure Suit Larry in Wet Dreams Don't Dry" (open in new tab), $3; Ken Follet's "The Pillars of the Earth" (opens in new tab) for $2, "Candle" (opens in new tab) for $1, etc. GOG may be aiming for a more mainstream digital store, but this is what I was after.
