Scorn's Latest Patch Fixes the Worst Parts of the Game

On October 27, Ebb Software released version 1.1.8.0, the first major patch (opens in new tab) since Scorn's release. This patch tweaks Scorn's checkpoint and save system, fixing the biggest flaw in the great survival horror game.

I love Scorn. I really, really love it so much that I give it an 80% in my review (open in new tab). This body horror adventure takes full advantage of its advanced graphics technology, looks like no other game I've played, and tells a disturbing sci-fi story reminiscent of mid-20th century masters like Philip K. Dick and Harlan Ellison, without using words and succeeds in doing so without using words. And yet it nearly burns out all my goodwill with its dreadful checkpoint system.

Scorn does not allow on-demand saves, but instead has rolling checkpoints and chapter/half-chapter hard saves. At the time of release, checkpoints could only be loaded upon death, and if you exited the game and came back, you had to access the chapter save to get back in.

In addition to being fairly user-unfriendly on its own, this system absolutely bit me in the butt when I encountered an out-of-progress bug. In particular, it glitched out 3/4 of the way through the climactic chapter. I reloaded the chapter save (this chapter didn't even have a midway point!). ), I had to start all over from the beginning. One of my final impressions of "Scorn," otherwise my favorite part of the game, was a frustrating run-back.

No more! With this patch, the latest checkpoints can now be accessed from the load menu. I went back to the save at the end of the game and checked, and to my surprise, the last checkpoint was right before the part where I glitched out the first time. With this QoL fix, I can heartily recommend Scorn for your spooky gaming needs this Halloween season.

The patch also includes other bug fixes and QoL changes:
