Nvidia Confirms Latest Driver Causing Problems with Modern Warfare 2

If you haven't updated to the latest Nvidia graphics drivers yet, you might want to wait a minute: Nvidia has confirmed that the bug causing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (opens in new tab) to crash is in the driver. They have confirmed that the bug is in the driver.

The problem was initially reported by Beenox, the lead studio for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2. They wrote: "We have noticed a stability issue with the latest NVIDIA driver 526.47 for Call of Duty #MWII. For now, we recommend using driver 516.59 or 522.25."

Nvidia later confirmed the problem in an email sent to PC Gamer. "Yes, a bug has been reported in this game and we are currently working on a hot fix." This is why our latest Game Ready Driver was not recommended for this title in the first place."

Ironically, several people posting problems on Reddit (opens in new tab) say they have updated to the latest drivers to address the crashing problem. For example, one Redditor stated that Steam requires a lengthy download after a crash (even though he did not actually download anything) before he can get the game running again. Updating graphics drivers is a standard initial step in troubleshooting, but in this case it apparently only makes the problem worse.

Nvidia did not provide a timeframe for when the hot fix will be available, but the current Game Ready Driver is still listed as 526.47. If you have already updated and want to roll back, nvidia.com has instructions for doing so (opens in a new tab).
