New World Welcomes "Fresh Start World" in November

"Fresh start servers" are designed to give players a chance to try out MMOs. Blizzard, for example, announced earlier this year that it would launch its "World of Warcraft Classic" expansion, "Wrath of the Lich King," on fresh servers (open in new tab); starting in November, Amazon's "New World" fresh Start World will go live, giving players of the game the same opportunity.

"We have received many requests for fresh start worlds, so we are using the time between the release of 'Brimston Sands' and the opening of these worlds to ensure a high-quality, fresh start," Amazon said in an announcement (opens in new tab open in new tab).

"All coins, loot, and characters must be born on these servers. This means that powerful or wealthy adventurers will not be able to move to any of the new worlds. A blank canvas awaits the revamped starting experience."

Incidentally, Brimstone Sands (opens in new tab) is an update coming today, October 18, that will add a new ancient Egyptian-themed zone, new explorers, Heartgem abilities, and Greatsword weapons. The full patch notes can be found here (opens in new tab).

Fresh start servers are not a new concept, but are common in older games: ArcheAge (opens in new tab), which launched in North America in 2014, rolled out a fresh start server in September, while 2013's Old School RuneScape ( opens in a new tab) opened its own Fresh Start server in late October; World of Warcraft is a decade older than either of those, though Wrath of the Lich King debuted in 2008, so it has not reached that age.

New World, on the other hand, is only a year old: it launched on September 28, 2021. And the past year has not been what one might call very smooth, as players have wrestled with technical problems, gold scammers, duffers, complaints about the economy, and a general sense that the game is not in good shape (open in new tab). In fact, some players on the New World subreddit (opens in new tab) have been calling the They welcome the transition.

"I think this is ultimately the right decision," FineLeg wrote."

"It gives us a chance to avoid and fix Brimstone's massive game-breaking bugs and glitches that could taint the new server.

"They are also lowering the huge influx of players that both Brimstone and the Fresh Start server could generate," Otiknayluj replied." Imagine welcoming returning players with a +2000 player queue."

Cyprux, on the other hand, was more pessimistic and took the position, "Why not both?" He said, "A later start for Fresh Start means people won't have to choose between Brimstone or Fresh. Now people can clog the servers with both events."

Eaglered2167, on the other hand, was more upbeat, arguing that players want a fresh start server now, but that the decision to start two weeks after the Brimstone Sands update was the "right way to go."

"We will release the fresh servers only after we are sure the major update bugs have been fixed to ensure the best experience," they wrote.

"We only have one chance to get old players back. If you start all at once and have major problems, you have lost your chance.

"Additionally, they just dropped a developer blog (opens in new tab) for a territory management update that will make major changes to how factions currently utilize settlements. This will especially help the economy of Fresh Start servers. As such, they need to get this in place before the Fresh Start servers open."

The New World Fresh Start World is scheduled to roll out on November 2.
