CD Projekt declares no plans for "Cyberpunk: Edge Runner" Season 2.

Netflix's animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners gave Cyberpunk 2077 a big boost last month, but it was a one-off: CD Projekt has revealed that a second season of the show is not in production.

It may come as a surprise to anyone who witnessed the impact Edgerunners had on CD Projekt's RPGs: a vigorous series by Studio Trigger made me consider giving the game another shot (open in new tab). Edgerunners was a huge Edgerunners was a hit, spawned a ton of mods (open in new tab), and the accompanying game updates have returned the RPG to being the most played game on Steam (open in new tab).

It is possible that CD Projekt now regrets its single-season plan, but it was a plan, and in an interview with Famitsu translated by VGC (opens in new tab), CD Projekt Red's Satoru Honma said, "We have received very good feedback and and we would like to continue working with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future." But then he went on to say: "To be clear, "Cyberpunk: Edge Runner" was planned as a stand-alone film.

Those who have seen the series or followed the history of Studio Trigger will nod at this news: Edgerunners is a complete story, and Hiroyuki Imaishi, director and co-founder of Studio Trigger (responsible for Edgerunners), is not likely to work on a sequel. director and co-founder of Studio Trigger (responsible for "Edgerunners") is unlikely to work on a sequel.

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that both CD Projekt and Netflix underestimated how popular "Cyberpunk Edgerunners" would be or how beneficial it would be for "Cyberpunk 2077. Given Honma's comments above and the upcoming sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 (open in new tab), perhaps we are not done with Netflix's cyberpunk anime just yet.
