See Laurel & Hardy on Nvidia Graphics Card Coolers

There have been several disclosures today showing off a pair of Nvidia Ada Lovelace graphics card designs from two different ends of the RTX 40 series, and the Chiphell forum (opens in new tab) has obtained some shots of the impossibly huge cooling arrays apparently spec'd for the 900W variant of Nvidia's top GPU silicon We got some shots of the impossibly huge cooling arrays that were apparently spec'd for the 900W variant of Nvidia's top GPU silicon.

And to be honest, they couldn't be more different.

Starting with the most obvious one, the RTX 4070 shroud featured by YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead. To protect their sources, they created a rendering from an actual photo of the card cooler, claiming that it "looks 99% real."

We are back to the RTX 4070's dual-slot design, which is frankly a blessed relief coming from behind the vast RTX 4090 (open in new tab) cooler. It also appears that the RTX 4080 (opens in new tab) 16GB Founders Edition will also feature this chombo. According to leaks, the RTX 4070 will effectively be a slightly smaller version of the RTX 3080 Founders Edition design.

Also, sources say that there is no indication of any cooling issues that would keep the RTX 4070 shrouded. And if we are looking at a cut-down version of the AD104 GPU that was once going to be used in the RTX 4080 12GB (open in new tab), one would hope so, given that it is a relatively small graphics die.

Indeed, at 295mm², it is only slightly larger than the GA106 chip Nvidia used to drive the previous generation RTX 3050.

When will the RTX 4070 arrive, and given that the RTX 4080 16GB will be available on November 16, the chances of getting a more mainstream GPU by the end of the year are pretty slim. It is also unlikely that this card will be available at a sensible price.

Definitely not getting a reasonable price tag are the Titan RTX Ada Lovelace cards that may have once existed; according to the MLID channel, this generation of Titan cards "melt power supplies and sometimes themselves (lol)." They seem to have been cancelled.

However, a design for a 900W-capable cooler was published in a Chiphell post, revealing the massive size of the chip chiller. Those working on the potential card in the lab claimed that the motherboard was mounted on the side of the card, rather than vice versa.

And if you look at the images available online, you will see why. The massive vapor chamber cooling array appears to be mounted vertically rather than horizontally over the PCB and GPU; if you look at where the actual mounting plates for the GPU and VRM are, they appear to be traditionally placed on the edge of the graphics card cooler.

I'm glad I used an open test bench here for the component benchmarks, as I would never have thought to push that thing into the actual chassis. However, that's no longer a concern, as it appears to have been cancelled.
