Forget stadiums, it's time for Google stadiums.

Forget stadiums, it's time for Google stadiums.

As reported by The Athletic (opens in new tab), Google is in negotiations with English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur FC about a possible megabucks deal for a new stadium in London named after the Internet giant. The specific amount has not been disclosed, but it would be eye-popping: Tottenham's stadium boasts an unparalleled futsal scran (open in new tab) and the total construction cost is estimated at more than $1 billion.

The stadium will open in 2019, and Spurs president Daniel Levy said at the time that the club was interested in signing a naming rights deal for "the right amount of money." And of course, if there is one thing Google is not short of, it is cash.

A potential deal would host the Premier League, the Champions League (at least for this season), and various other sporting events (an NFL game just took place, but also boxing, rugby, and concerts).

Sports sponsorships are not new for Google, but this will likely be its largest to date: it has existing sponsorships in the NBA and MLB, and earlier this year signed a deal with McLaren for Formula 1. [Tottenham's most recent honor was the 2008 League Cup, and the league championship has to go back to 1961 (though they finished second in the 2016/2017 season). The team is infamous for its attacking play as well as its soft heart, but regardless of the cobwebs in its trophy cabinet, it remains one of the most prominent and valuable soccer clubs in the world.

For now, the stadium remains the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium; we have asked Google for comment and will update if we hear back.
