Blizzard Quietly Fixes Overwatch 2 'Auto Purchase' Glitch, But No Refunds Yet

Blizzard's latest hotfix resolves a bug that allowed players using in-game chat to accidentally make purchases in the game's store. The bug was inexplicably created by Reddit user Dracyoshi (opens in new tab), who purchased the Junker Queen plutonium skin while using chat in the game's hero gallery.

Dracyoshi speculates that the bug occurred because the game mistakenly interpreted the text written in chat as menu navigation input. While this may sound like an excuse after a buyer's remorse, there were quite a few other commenters with similar stories, and Blizzard seems to agree that there was a problem, as the hotfix they sent out on Friday seems to have fixed the issue.

Dracyoshi contacted Blizzard support and asked for a refund for the wrong purchase, but was told that Blizzard could not "refund or compensate for unlocks made with Overwatch in-game currency."

While things seem rather bleak regarding the possibility of affected users getting refunds, I'm not giving up just yet. The support representative told Drakijosi to provide further feedback if they "believe there is a problem with the game (that caused their issue)". And if Blizzard has acknowledged the problem by fixing it with a patch, then not reimbursing the affected parties would be self-inflicted PR.

Then again, the public image of "Overwatch" is not exactly at its best right now. The auto-buy bug is just one of a series of troubles that have affected "Overwatch 2" since its launch on October 4. Players have been stuck in long lines (opens in new tab) and there is still confusion about the game's SMS protection system and prepaid cell phones (opens in new tab). Not reimbursing hundreds of legacy credits to affected players seems to be a headache Blizzard wants to avoid right now.
