Square Enix Montreal changes its name to Studio Onoma.

General
Square Enix Montreal changes its name to Studio Onoma.

The elongated letters and colorful palette herald the rebranding of the studio formerly known as Square Enix Montreal. The renaming of the studio was necessitated by the fact that it was no longer under the Square Enix umbrella. [The studio produced innovative games that crossed over between mobile and PC, such as "Hitman," "Lara Croft," and "Deus Ex GO. Studio Onoma has since worked on the "Hitman Sniper" spin-off series.

Onoma is currently working on two mobile-first games: "Tomb Raider Reloaded" (opens in new tab) and "Avatar Generations" (opens in new tab), based on "Avatar: The Last Airbender".

When the Embracer Group, a fast-growing Swedish game holding company, acquired all of Square Enix's Western studios for a whopping $300 million at the end of August (opens in new tab), there were many stirrings. This included Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal. These three companies make up Eidos Interactive Corporation, a group of companies in the vein of Eidos Interactive, the popular publisher famous for creating the "Tomb Raider" series in the late 90s and early 2000s.

The studio apparently began rebranding about five months ago in May. The announcement on the Studio Onoma website (opens in a new tab) is really interesting to the type of dummies like me who find the inner workings of complex organizational processes like branding and graphic design fascinating.

The news post details how the team sought a brand that would withstand future changes in ownership and direction without alienating any segment of gamers. They created a custom font for the Onoma logo, with the elongated O in the center intended as a stand-alone symbol that could be used in many advertisements and products.
