'Improving the Saints Row Experience': 'Saints Row' Developers Prioritize Fixes Over New Content

The reboot of Saints Row (open in new tab) did not generate the response that Volition and Deep Silver hoped for. The surprisingly orthodox action-crime epic is a bit too toned down compared to its predecessor: "Compared to spraying sewage on a mansion to lower property values or driving a car while being attacked by a tiger in the passenger seat, the reboot's activities seem tame," said editor Jodi McGregor writes in her 60% review (opens in new tab).

Lars Vingefors, CEO of Deep Silver's parent company, Embracer Group, also admitted in September that he expected the game (opens in new tab) to be better received, but added that the company is committed to the long-term future of the series.

As such, "providing new content is now a lower priority," Volition said in an update posted today (opens in new tab), allowing it to focus instead on improving the base game.

"We support Saints Row for the long term and would prefer to talk about roadmaps and expansions, but right now we have to focus on telling you how we will improve the Saints Row experience for all players in 2022 and beyond. We believe that we have to focus on communicating how we will improve the Saints Row experience for all players beyond 2022," Volition stated.

"Right now, our development priority is to deliver improvements rather than new features. To that end, we plan to deliver our first major update in late November and pack it with as many improvements and fixes as we can."

The first major update, scheduled for late November, will include over 200 bug fixes and stability upgrades, with a "particular emphasis on challenge, overall stability, and co-op."

Volition apologized for taking longer than expected to fix co-op He apologized for the time it took and said that along with bug fixes, they are also working on making it clear to players "when and how co-op is available."

Quality of life changes, including "reduced repetition in some activities, more rewarding challenges, improved vehicle management, and revamped rumble and haptic features," will also be made in this update, although only the "tip of the iceberg." Volition stated." These are wins that we believe we can deliver quickly to you while we work on bigger and better improvements based on your feedback."

It is not unprecedented for a game to recover from a failed launch, as we have seen recently with "No Man's Sky" (opens in new tab) and "Cyberpunk 2077" (opens in new tab). The big question is how much of the trouble with "Saints Row" is due to technical problems and how much is simply because it is not a great game. While our review of "Saints Row" found that it works fairly well, the open-world activities are "the worst ever," and the fictional city of Santo Ireso, where "Saints Row" takes place, is "so flat that when I wasn't doing side work that required the use of a wingsuit, I forgot I even had a wingsuit I forgot I even had a wingsuit". Like bugs, the overwhelming design is very difficult to patch.

While the focus is on improving the technical aspects of the game, that doesn't mean that "Saints Row" will be entirely without new content in 2022. The "Front to Back" cosmetic pack, which apparently includes ugly clothes and ugly car skins, will be free for all players this week, and more free content packs (some of which are exclusive to Expansion Pass owners, so not "free" in the strict sense) will be available before the end of the year.

"Série" will also be available for free for all players.

"We intend to support Saints Row for the long term," said Borrichon, "and 2023 should be a very exciting year for Saints Row owners, with all-new story content (included in the Expansion Pass, but also separately available for purchase), free new gameplay experiences and areas to explore in the city, and much more.
