With Prime Day Early Access, this benefit of Amazon Prime could save you big.

General
With Prime Day Early Access, this benefit of Amazon Prime could save you big.

When shopping for the best deals on Amazon Prime Day Early Access (opens in new tab), you should be aware of a little-noticed Amazon Prime benefit. Prime members can save 20% on eligible open-box items at Amazon Warehouse (opens in new tab).

Open box items are items that are returned to Amazon, tested, and resold without their original packaging. The item description details the exact condition of the item. I recommend sticking with "like new" as these items are the closest thing to buying something right off the shelf.

The price difference between new and opened items can often be quite impressive. Add another 20% on top of that and you can save a lot of money. For example, this HyperX Cloud II headset (open in new tab) costs $75 new, but if you apply the discount to the open box model, it comes to $49.43, nearly $30 less. The only caveat is that there may be an "appearance flaw" somewhere in the headset; Amazon actually provides a breakdown (opens in new tab) of what each warehouse's product condition description means so you know what you're getting.

There are other Prime Day warehouse deals besides headsets, including an Xbox Series S for $211 before tax and an Asus AX1800 WiFi 6 Router gaming router for $51 after discount. Also cheap are 4K HDMI cables (open in new tab) and microSD cards (open in new tab) Other popular items to consider shopping at the Amazon warehouse are TVs and gaming monitors. In that case, if you don't mind coming in a nondescript brown box (or a slightly battered box), it's a really easy way to save money on a new product that often doesn't go on sale this deep.

Don't worry about getting stuck with dead pixels: all open-box items are subject to Amazon's return policy (opens in new tab), and the same rules apply to these items. Amazon cannot guarantee replacement inventory in the same condition if you decide to return it, though, so that's something to keep in mind.

Again, be sure to read the item details to see what is missing and if there is any cosmetic damage. Even if you are not taking advantage of the current 20% discount, remember to keep an eye on the Amazon warehouse, especially after Prime Early Access ends. You may be able to get a great deal on PC gaming gear that someone purchased on impulse and returned a week later.
