LG to Increase Production of W-OLED Gaming Screens

Never thought I'd see the day, but it seems that manufacturers are feeling uncertain about the future of large home-use TVs and are instead looking to PC monitors as the screen of the future. Surprisingly, one such company seems to be LG, which is known as the brand that produces the most popular TVs, even winning the Best Gaming TV award (open in new tab) with its LG OLED48CX. (Open in new tab) Still, it is an interesting move by a company that recently announced the largest and smallest OLED gaming TVs on the market (open in new tab).

According to a report received by OLED-info (opens in new tab), the electronics giant plans to focus primarily on the production of white OLED or WOLED panels around 40 inches. While this is focused on small TVs, it is also clear that the focus is on gaming monitors, as the company plans to begin production of a 27-inch WOLED by the end of this month and to bring displays to market with LGE screens in the first quarter of next year.

When it comes to screens, WOLED is a bit on the complicated side. The white backlight suppresses colors, and sometimes blacks are not as deep as they could be. Nevertheless, LG has already used WOLED technology in many of its TVs, and so far it tends to excel in deep blacks and HDR. They have also added gaming features, including app support for Nvidia's GeForce Now (opens in new tab). As for the track record, we expect great panels. Still, it will be nice to see first-hand how these smaller panels handle up close and personal.

This new WOLED screen from LG is expected to come with a better price tag. LG's current OLED monitors of this size are packed with Japanese OLED standard panels and many other features, making them fairly expensive pieces of kit. If LG is going to produce its own panels this time around, one would hope that manufacturing costs will be lower, and that this cost will be passed on to the consumer. [At the moment, LG has just launched a 48-inch UHD 4K OLED gaming monitor in Australia, the 48GQ900-B UltraGear (opens in new tab), for a suggested retail price of $2,599. The monitor has been available in other parts of the world for some time now, with an official refresh rate of 120 Hz and a maximum of 138 Hz when switched to overclocking mode. However, due to the delay in launch, Australia may not see this new WOLED screen for some time.

This is an interesting time for gaming monitors. This year, HyperX introduced a new gaming monitor that comes standard with a VESA arm (opens in new tab); Corsair introduced a wildly bendable monitor (opens in new tab) that uses a panel provided by LG. This is the same OLED that LG is using in its new LG UltraGear 240Hz curved OLED (opens in new tab) screen, which was just announced a few months ago. Things seem to be moving very fast in the monitor world right now.
