Star Trek: Resurgence" delayed until April 2023

When Senior Editor Wes Fenlon saw a bit of "Star Trek: Resurgence" (opens in new tab) earlier this year, he liked it mostly because it reminded him of the old Star Trek we know: technobabble and simplistic space diplomacy. The game, he writes, is "the first Trek production in a long, long time to capture the spirit of the '90s show."

Unfortunately, developer Dramatic Labs has opted to delay its release to 2023, so we'll have to wait longer than expected to enjoy its sci-fi delights.

"While production progressed well throughout the summer, we made the difficult decision to move the release date from 2022 in order to put the final polish on the game and create a truly immersive Star Trek experience. Star Trek: Resurgence will be available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox in April 2023.

"Our love and admiration for Star Trek led us to this decision. We are proud of what we have accomplished so far and this project remains a passion project for everyone here. We are incredibly grateful and excited to be working in this universe that means so much to so many people."

Delays are always unfortunate, but in this case it would be a wise choice. While Wes enjoyed the subtlety and tone of the TNG style in Resurgence, he was concerned about the technical state of the game, including awkward movement and old "robotic" facial animation.

"'Resurgence' is not finished, of course, and there is still time to smooth out the most glaring flaws,"

said the developers. But the developers say the animations are getting closer to what they want, so don't expect a dramatic transformation between now and the release later this year."

If Dramatic Labs can use the extra six months to bring the technical quality of "Star Trek: Resurgence" up to the real-world equivalent of "10,000 teradynes per second," it will be worth the wait.
