John Carpenter still wants to make "Dead Space"

Legendary filmmaker John Carpenter has reiterated his enthusiasm for a Dead Space adaptation, speaking to the A.V. Club (opens in new tab) about adapting EA's horror series after being asked if there were any games he was considering making into a movie. [Carpenter told William Hughes of the A.V. Club, "The only one I can think of is, as I said before, 'Dead Space. That would be a really great movie. I could do it."

As Carpenter's remarks suggest, this is not the first time the director has spoken about adapting "Dead Space" for the screen. He previously mentioned the idea (opens in new tab) to Game Informer in 2013, saying, "Dead Space would be a great movie. Everything about it is great." An avid gamer, Carpenter is a big fan of Visceral Games' sci-fi horror trilogy, and when asked by the A.V. Club which "Dead Space" was his favorite, the director replied. 'Well, they were all really good. I also like the action prequels, which nobody liked."

Carpenter has not directed a feature film since 2010's The Ward, explaining to Collider (opens in new tab) in 2019 that he was "burned out." However, he has recently talked about returning to filmmaking (opens in new tab). The Dead Space series was inspired by Carpenter's Thing films, particularly the game's hostile and mutating necromorphs.

In addition to speaking enthusiastically about "Dead Space," Carpenter also talked about the games he played this year and said he was "hooked" on "Fallout 76 (open in new tab)." He said, "I know there were some bugs and a lot of things were left out, but I thought it was great. He cited the game's vast open world where you can "walk around" as a major draw. That's what I like about 'Fallout. There is a template. There are missions, but you can do them differently. And every once in a while, a new mission or a new idea comes along. That's good. It's really interesting.
