General
Valve has just applied for a new "computer game software" trademark, and rumors are already flying.
[Between Steam Deck, VR-related matters, and the long-neglected overhaul of Steam's mobile app (opens in new tab), you'd be forgiven for thinking that Valve has been busy enough that it hasn't felt the need to launch a new project. That's because the new trademark (opens in new tab) that Valve filed on October 10 unintentionally publicized the existence of something called Neon Prime.

The application, which is still being processed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, identifies Neon Prime as "computer game software, electronic game software, video game software, and computer game programs downloadable via the Internet." According to my excellent powers of deduction, this has to do with video games and video game software, and there are rumors (open in new tab) even on the Internet that Neon Prime may be a new game or series of games from Valve.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves; while it is tempting to make bold predictions about what Valve is up to, there is a vast array of things that could fall under the "computer game software" umbrella. It could be just a new tool, some sort of anti-cheat, or new software for Steam decks. But hey, you can believe it's "Half-Life 3" if that makes you happy. We won't stop you.

It's also worth remembering that trademarks are always filed, and eventually never used. Even if it is an embryonic idea for a new game, the plans Valve has for Neon Prime may be years away and may never see the light of day. It could simply be that Valve thinks Neon Prime is a very cool name and wants to hold it down before someone else puts it on. The possibilities of being overwhelmed are endless.

Still, it would be fun to speculate, wouldn't it, Valve has been incredibly aggressive lately, with Half-Life: Alyx (open in new tab) getting its first Half-Life game in 13 years, released in 2020. The possibility of a new game from the now vibrant Valve is by no means zero. Maybe, first and foremost, a game made for the Steam deck." Come to think of it, Neon Prime has the same number of characters as Half-Life 3. Let the rumors roll.
