Mojang Announces Minecraft 1.20, First Beta Coming "in a Few Days"

At the 2022 Minecraft Live (opens in new tab) event, Mojang revealed a few key details about the upcoming 1.20 update for the long-lived survival game and a release window scheduled for spring 2023.Mojang also, announced that the first playable features and snapshots of the update will be accessible "a few days from now" and revealed the winner of the 2022 Mob Poll (open in new tab): the Noble and Honorable Sniffer

Unlike previous major updates, Mojang has yet not named it 1.20 and hopes to shape and characterize it in a dialogue with the community. The developer revealed some of the new features, including seven new default skins in addition to the classic Steve, which Mojang hopes will allow players to feel represented in the game without having to immediately switch to custom options, and a new default character will be featured and will be included in marketing in a similar fashion to Steve's.

Mojang also revealed snazzy new bamboo building materials, with intricate window designs and hilarious hanging signs; Minecraft will also add a rideable camel, which will be a new addition to the game. After garnering 3.5 million votes, the charismatic and adorable Tough Golem was robbed by a sham democracy and came in last place. Sniffer went the distance and became the new president of the Minecraft mob added to the game. Sniffers grow from eggs found in the ground and go through a life cycle, ending up in a giant growth state.

While 1.20 sounds fun, Mojang has yet to reveal a specific date for the first snapshot, instead saying it will appear in "just a few days (open in new tab)." In the meantime, check out our guide to everything we know about the Minecraft 1.20 update (opens in new tab).
