Obsidian CEO Says He Wants to Make a Sequel to "Fallout"

Speaking to Dualshockers (opens in new tab) on the 25th anniversary of "Fallout," Obsidian Entertainment CEO and co-founder Feargus Urquhart said, "If we had the opportunity to make another 'Fallout' game, we would make it. It's not even a question of whether we would do it, but whether the opportunity would present itself."

Obsidian developed Fallout: New Vegas, considered by many fans to be the best Fallout game (open in new tab) When Microsoft acquired Bethesda, there was some question whether Obsidian would return to work on Bethesda's series The studio responded with a simple shrug emoji (opens in new tab).

Since New Vegas, Obsidian has been responsible for RPGs like South Park: The Stick of Truth, the Pillars of Eternity series, and The Outer Worlds. The studio currently has a lot on its plate, having just released the survival game "Grounded" and the medieval murder mystery "Pentiment," due out on November 15. Avowed, a first-person game that shares the setting of Pillars of Eternity, is also on the way, and The Outer Worlds 2 is in development.

But when Obsidian thinks about what game to make next, Fallout will probably be on the list. At some point, they will start looking at what their next game will be, and I would be surprised if 'Fallout' is not on that list," Urquhart told Dualshockers.

"If we do Fallout, it would have to tie in with what Bethesda is doing with Fallout and a lot of other things, but I've always said my personal hope is to make another Fallout game before we ride off into the sunset.

Urquhart was the director of Black Isle Studios, Interplay's RPG division, which produced the Fallout series; he left in 2003 to found Obsidian, but told Dualshockers, "Fallout I've been at Interplay for over a year because I wanted to make more 'Fallout' games, and I love Fallout."

Bethesda director Todd Howard has said Fallout 5 will come out after The Elder Scrolls 6, and The Elder Scrolls 6 is still in pre-production until Starfield is released. Basically, Bethesda will not release a new Fallout game this decade.

In the meantime, if you want some post-apocalyptic role-playing, inXile, founded by Brian Fargo, director of Fallout 1 and 2, is making two RPGs in a similar vein to the original with sequels to Wasteland. Wasteland 3 in particular is quite excellent.
