Killswitch, an add-on to the Steam deck, to be redesigned after a "million dollar" mistake.

Gadget accessory maker Dbrand has suspended sales of its Steam Deck case Project Killswitch (opens in new tab).

In a Reddit post titled "Our Million-Dollar Mistake (opens in new tab)" (spotted by GamingOnLinux (opens in new tab)), Dbrand points to a recent report from The Verge (opens in new tab), Dbrand points to a recent report from The Verge (opens in new tab).

Steam Decks have fans from one of two manufacturers, Delta or Huaying. Magnetic kickstand interference appears to affect only the Delta fans, but the only way to know for sure is to open the Steam Deck. According to the company, they cracked open the Steam Deck used for testing and found that it contained a Huaying fan. Killswitch owners who are unsure which type of fan is in their Steam Deck should avoid using the kickstand until a replacement is shipped, Dbrand said.

"This eleventh-hour turnaround is why we canceled last night's general release and halted sales," Dbrand wrote.

"We did not want to place any more orders for Kilswitch until we had a plan in place to overcome this challenge.

The company plans to replace the magnetic mount with a mechanical interlock system compatible with all accessories, but the revision is "expected to take time."

All customers who ordered the magnetic kill switch will receive a free replacement, and Dbrand is not requiring customers to return the magnetic version. The company jokes that owners should "put it on their refrigerator as a memento of our failure." Customers who purchased the Killswitch as a personal import and want a refund can email Dbrand (opens in new tab) to initiate the refund process; Dbrand has also begun taking orders for an updated version of Project Killswitch that will ship in the first quarter of 2023.
