Kerbal Space Program studio is working on something new

Intercept Games was formed in early 2020 (opens in new tab) to oversee the development of "Kerbal Space Program 2," which had previously been in development at Star Theory Games, the original Kerbal studio. All "key members" of the "Kerbal 2" team, including former Star Theory Games studio head Jeremy Ables, creative director Nate Simpson, and lead producer Nate Robinson, have moved to Intercept to to continue development of the game.

However, the process that followed was not perfectly smooth. At the time, "Kerbal Space Program 2" was scheduled to be released on or before March 31, 2021, but after numerous delays, it is now not expected to be released until early 2023 (opens in new tab). It was also recently revealed

that while Intercept Games was established specifically to work on "Kerbal 2," another game is also in the works.

According to Take-Two's job posting (opens in new tab), that project is "an unpublished stylized science-based adventure game." According to the job description, applicants must have "a passion for space exploration, rocketry, world building, and related entertainment media" and will be responsible for (among other things) "translating the visual design language of the game into an explorable world." Experience creating and working with "fully spherical planets" and experience with Unreal Engine, Gaea (terrain design tool), World Creator, and World Machine are bonus skills to have.

These details sound like the duties involved in KSP2. Some other Private Division job postings clearly state that the position is for KSP2, which could be taken as an indication that this job posting is something else.

At any rate, it is worth noting that Intercept is working on something else - perhaps some sort of Kerbal spin-off ("stylized science-based adventure" would certainly fit the bill), or something completely original. And, of course, one wonders what, if any, impact this new project will have on Kerbal 2.

In a September thread on the Kerbal forum (open in new tab) where this list was first brought to our attention, one user speculated that it might indicate that Kerbal 2 is sufficiently advanced that Intercept can afford to start moving developers on to other things

I have asked Private Division for comments and will update if they reply.
