Exclusive Horror Game "Gylt" Finally Released Due to Stadia's Failure

Remember Gylt' Perfectly fair: a single-player action-adventure horror game created by Tequila Works of Rime Studios and released exclusively on Google Stadia in 2019. Despite some rumblings from the developers (open in new tab) about making it multi-platform, it stayed that way. But the looming demise of Stadia means it will finally happen.

"Spooky Season is just around the corner ... And we bring great news!" The studio announced (opens in new tab) (via Eurogamer (opens in new tab)). "We've been working on it for a long time, and now it's finally time to officially announce: GYLT will go multiplatform in 2023!"

Admittedly not the most detailed announcement, I think the whole Gylt situation sums up Stadia's biggest problem: despite being a platform exclusive from a reputable indie studio, it has little exposure or visibility, and the pandemic has made people (like It received little attention at a time when people were heavily turning to in-home entertainment (like playing video games.) Gylt's owners will not take a financial hit from Stadia's closure, as Google is offering full refunds, and the company's owners will likely be able to continue to play the game, even though it's not a game they've been playing for years. But it is clearly a problem for those who want to continue (or even start) playing, and not a good thing for Tequila Works.

With the impending closure of Stadia and its permanent closure in January, many developers are looking for a new location for their games. Prior to Tequila Works' announcement, Ubisoft (open in new tab), IO Interactive (open in new tab), and Bungie (open in new tab) also said they were considering other options for players. But it was an even more unpleasant shock for developers with products nearing launch (opens in new tab): Mike Rose of No More Robots, for example, whose studio plans to launch a game on Stadia in November and will not be paid because the platform will disappear He expressed concern that they may not get paid because the platform will disappear. "To all those who kept begging us to "PLEASE BRING YOUR GAMES TO STADIA" - this is why we did not," he tweeted.

Splash Damage, which released the eight-player party shooter "Outcasters" exclusively to Stadia in 2020, hinted at the possibility of making a similar move, but has not yet made a commitment, saying, "We will need a few days (open in new tab) to evaluate our options for Outcasters going forward. opens in a new tab), stating only that "it will need to take a few days (opens in new tab) to evaluate Outcasters' future options.
