Oops: CPU cooler recalled for not cooling CPU

Hardware manufacturer Fractal Design has halted sales and issued a recall of its Lumen AIO series water-cooled coolers (opens in new tab) following "user reports of elevated CPU temperatures."

According to Fractal Design (opens in new tab) (via HotHardware (opens in new tab)), the two factors that may be causing the spike in CPU temperature are "soldering material used in the aluminum radiator" and "impurities introduced during manufacturing. The company also claims that two factors may be causing the spike in CPU temperatures: "soldering materials used in the aluminum radiator" and "impurities introduced during manufacturing.

The company states that these factors can cause "reactions with the chemical composition of the coolant" and cause a "buildup of deposits" in the CPU block, which can lead to higher CPU temperatures. The company states that Lumen AIOs without thermal problems can still be safely used, but that it will pull all of them from its store shelves until quality standards are improved.

Fractal Design added that they are "working on a new version with a revamped radiator and liquid formula and revised assembly processes and guidelines."

Last year, Fractal Design had to recall the Torrent Case (opens in new tab) fan hub because of an issue that could have caused a short circuit. Fractal was quick to address the situation.

Fractal Design is asking customers with potentially affected AIO coolers to complete this web form (opens in new tab) to request a replacement. Replacements will be shipped to customers, dealers, and resellers within approximately six weeks.
