EA's Origin is officially closed.

General
EA's Origin is officially closed.

In 2020, Electronic Arts announced that the Origin launcher would be updated and reborn as the EA app (opens in new tab). More than two years later, it's finally ready: EA announced today that the app has exited open beta and will soon overcome Origin's corpse to take its place as EA's "primary PC platform."

"The EA app is our fastest and lightest PC client to date. With its new streamlined design, it's easy to find the games and content you're looking for and discover new favorites." Automatic game downloads and background updates allow you to have your games ready to play at any time."

"The new EA App is the fastest and lightest PC client ever.

In addition to the regular launcher, the EA app also connects to other platforms including Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, allowing users to integrate their friends list and keep track of what others are doing.

The upgrade process from Origin to the app is simple: download the EA app, run the installer, and the old launcher root and stem will be removed and dropped in its place. To be honest, I've barely used Origin, so I can't fairly compare the two, but the app is definitely faster and has a simpler layout. The store page is a simple grid of icons, sortable by genre, player, language, and EA Play subscription, with installed games listed in the left sidebar, just below the link to the library. The store page loads quickly and the layout is simple and easy to read.

Overall, the EA app is definitely a step up, but aside from its name, it is just plain awful. (I mean, "EA App," really?) They don't even capitalize the word "app". It's just awful.) If you want to stick with the old Origin for some odd reason, you can, but it probably won't last long.

"We will be announcing the transition soon. By the time you receive your invitation, all your games and content, including those already installed, will be ready and waiting for you in the EA app," EA said. Local and cloud saves will be carried over, allowing you to resume where you left off. Your friends list will also carry over, so you don't have to worry about remembering all your player IDs."

I'm sure you'll be able to find your way back to the game in a few days.

Doesn't sound like an "option" to me, but based on my experience, I see no reason not to migrate now. The installer is available at ea.com (opens in new tab).
