Valve Edits Steam Deck Trailer to Remove Nintendo Switch Emulator Icon

Valve released a Steam Deck video on Thursday, announcing that the portable gaming PC can finally be ordered without a pre-order (opens in new tab). The video also celebrates the arrival of the Steam Deck dock and improvements to the operating system that make the Deck work better with external displays. But gaming Twitter news hound Nibellion (opens in new tab) also found something surprising in Valve's video Steam Deck library. It appears in the Recent Games list on the home screen, next to Hades.

After Nibellion's tweet was retweeted by the thousands on Friday morning, Valve de-listed the video and uploaded a new version (opens in new tab) that does not show Yuzu. The original video (opens in new tab) is now set to private.

Valve has long claimed that the Steam Deck is a PC and can therefore be customized and used for any software you want. But, unsurprisingly, they do not advertise the Deck as an emulation device (even though it is really, really good (opens in new tab)); Yuzu is legitimate open source software, but Nintendo is not exactly thrilled about its existence.

In March, when the Steam Deck review was first published, Nintendo launched a DMCA takedown (opens in new tab) of a YouTube video showing a Nintendo Switch game running on Valve's handheld. Since more videos can now be found on YouTube, Nintendo may have relaxed the takedown. Still, given that Valve and Nintendo are friendly enough to bring "Portal" to the Switch, the safe political move here would be to not tacitly endorse Switch emulation on the Steam Deck.

We have asked Valve for comment on this video and will update this article if we hear back.
