After jumping into a styrofoam hole during the TwitchCon San Diego event over the weekend, Twitch streamer Adriana Chechik (opens in new tab), who has 802,000 followers, broke her back in two places (opens in new tab) and had to have metal She had to have a metal support rod surgically inserted.

The Lenovo Legion booth hosted a "face-off" (opens in new tab) event in which streamers tried to knock each other off a raised podium using padded poles, a la "Gladiators. The podiums were placed in a Styrofoam pit, but the word "pit" may be an exaggeration. The term "pit" may be an exaggeration, as it appeared to be nothing more than a thin scattering of Styrofoam cubes in what looked like an inflatable pool on the convention's hard floor.

Chechik's injury was the most serious, but she was not the only streamer injured in the foam pit; LochVaness (opens in new tab) dislocated her knee and sprained her ankle (opens in new tab) after getting off the podium after winning.

Contestants were warned against jumping into the pits and had to sign liability waivers, but a commentator at the booth (opens in new tab) said they were "all about safety here at the Lenovo Legion booth. Have clean fun, be able to jump into the bubbles and enjoy yourself at the end of the day". Everyone seemed to assume that more care had been taken to ensure that the bubble pit, which was placed so that people could fall into it, was actually safe for adult humans to fall into.

The pit was eventually closed (opens in new tab), so hopefully that is the end of the injuries and the end of the infamous convention pits like DashCon's ball pit (opens in new tab).

TwitchCon has previously injured another streamer in an unrelated incident; Genshin Impact streamer Zummmers (open in new tab) was competing in the World Balloon Cup (an event where people compete to keep balloons in the air) . The competition took place in an enclosed area that resembled a living room, and Zummmers jumped over a chair and broke his ankle (opens in new tab).
