Suspected "Grand Theft Auto 6" Hacker Pleads Not Guilty

The "Grand Theft Auto 6" leak drama took another step forward over the weekend, as Eurogamer (opens in new tab) reports that the boy accused in the matter has pleaded not guilty to computer misuse charges.

The 17-year-old hacker was arrested (opens in new tab) in Oxfordshire on September 22, less than a week after a devastating leak (opens in new tab) involving 90 gameplay videos taken from a test build of "GTA 6". Interestingly, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge of computer misuse, but guilty to another charge of violating bail conditions.

Details of the condition violation were not disclosed, but it probably relates to an earlier cyber attack for which he has already been charged. According to technology reporter Matthew Keyes (opens in new tab), the suspect was arrested and charged earlier this year in connection with attacks against companies including Microsoft and Nvidia.

Keyes added that the suspect is associated with the hacking group Lapsus$. Seven people between the ages of 16 and 21 in the UK associated with this group were arrested (open in new tab) by the City of London Police earlier this year in connection with these hacks. Indeed, it was the similarities between these attacks and the Rockstar and Uber hacks that ultimately caught the FBI's attention (open in new tab) that led police to the suspects in the first place.

One of the alleged leaders of the group that carried out the Microsoft and Nvidia attacks was reportedly 16 years old at the time and had amassed a Bitcoin fortune worth approximately $13 million, despite his parents' efforts to "stop him from going on the computer," which apparently did not work. The same person has not been confirmed. For this suspect, who has not been identified as the same person, it would not matter: after filing this petition, he was remanded to juvenile detention.
