Cyberpunk 2077" sold more than 20 million copies.

CD Projekt's cyber renaissance continues today with the studio announcing that "Cyberpunk 2077" has sold over 20 million units. [20+ million cyberpunks roamed the streets of Night City, partying with Jackie, getting to know Johnny, driving with Panem, diving with Judy, hanging out with River, and listening to Kelly sing," CD Projekt tweeted. Thank you! Looking forward to seeing you all in the 'afterlife'!" ...

Afterlife, by the way, is a nightclub in cyberpunk 2077 that caters primarily to mercenaries and muscle.

Twenty million copies sold is a remarkable achievement that puts the game alongside some very impressive peers, including CD Projekt's previous title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (open in new tab). However, it is still far behind true behemoths such as "Minecraft" (238 million units), "Grand Theft Auto 5" (170 million units) and "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds" (75 million units). What is even more impressive is how quickly they have achieved it. For example, "Stardew Valley" (open in new tab) took six years to sell 20 million copies, while "The Witcher 3" took four years and "Cyberpunk 2077" less than two years.

CD Projekt's official investor relations account, usually a rigorous source of financial and regulatory information for investors, analysts, and other business professionals, also enjoyed these big numbers.

Cyberpunk sales were more than half sold out within weeks (open in new tab) of its December 2020 launch. Nevertheless, the fact that the game sold more than 6 million copies in the year and a half that followed is not surprising, especially considering the game's well-known problems and its complete disappearance from the PlayStation Store (open in new tab) during that time.

CD Projekt continues to work on Cyberpunk 2077 (opens in new tab), postponing plans for new content and expansions in order to focus on fixing and improving performance rather than walking away with a loss after the botched release. While these efforts are undoubtedly paying off, there has also been a great response from the "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners" animation, which was released on Netflix earlier this month. The anime has inspired Wes to give the game another shot (opens in new tab), or at least reconsider, as Steam's average and peak concurrent player counts have skyrocketed (opens in new tab) and the game is now in the middle of Steam's top 10 games by player count Steam's top 10 games in terms of players.
