Razer's Cloud Gaming Handhelds to Feature 5G

At Mobile World Congress, Verizon announced its partnership with Qualcomm and Razer. Currently, Razer is planning to release a new handheld gaming device designed specifically for cloud gaming and streaming.

The Razer Edge 5G is built on a Snapdragon G3 Gen 1 intended to take advantage of Verizon's 5G Ultrawideband. No specific hardware details were revealed at the show, but we did get a brief first look at the handheld, courtesy of Twitter user GLKCreative (opens in new tab).

According to Verizon's press release, this is an Android device that "lets you access the games you love: download and play locally, stream from your console, or access directly from the cloud." If that's true, it's something even the multifunctional Steam Deck (opens in new tab) can't do.

Last week, Logitech announced the G Cloud gaming console (opens in new tab), which specializes in cloud gaming with streaming apps such as GeForce Now, Steam Remote Play, and Xbox Cloud gaming via WiFi The Edge 5G can stream games over both WiFi and 5G, and looks to do much more than that.

More ways to play games on the go is never a bad thing. However, there are still many things we don't know about the Edge 5G, including pricing, storage capacity, and cost. More importantly, will it be able to access various game storefronts and libraries like the Epic Games Store, Steam, and Xbox Game Pass? For example, the Logitech G Cloud can only download games from the Google Play Store and not locally from a PC game library; if the Edge 5G can do that, it will be a serious competitor not only to the G Cloud but also to the Steam Deck It will be.

Razer plans to reveal more details about the Edge 5G at RazerCon on October 15 (opens in new tab).
