Creepshow game by the development team behind "Dread X Collection" is now available

The Dread X Collection is a bite-sized horror package that is at least partially responsible for the recent resurgence of retro horror games (especially in the PS1 era.) The games featured in the five collections range from the comedic to the truly creepy, from first-person shooters to point-and-click adventures, touching on a wide range of genres.

The episodic nature of the collection might make it similar to George Romero's old horror anthology Creepshow. This is because the "Dread X Collection" production team is working on a "Creepshow" game that will tie in with the recent episodic revival produced by AMC.

The new edition of "Creepshow" (opens in new tab), which returns in 2019, is available exclusively on the horror-themed streaming service Shudder. Production is currently wrapping up on the fourth season, but the game adaptation won't be ready until 2024. Perhaps it will be worth the wait. The studio responsible for "The Reaper's Assistant" is involved, and Brian Clark, the developer of that game, is the creative director for the entire "Creepshow" project.

AMC and DreadXP have teased more announcements in the coming months, and it is unclear whether the game adaptation will be based on an actual episode of Creepshow or something like the old Dread X Collections under a new name. The announcement confirms that the game will "maintain the iconic franchise's anthology horror format, consisting of multiple self-contained horror stories that span gameplay genres and tones." In other words, it is essentially the Dread X Collection."

"Dread X" is not the only video game horror anthology: the "Haunted PS1 Demo Disc" is a notable example of modern retro horror that exploits the creepy and eerie qualities of early 3D graphics. My personal favorite developer of this type is Puppet Combo, and his "Murder House" is excellent; "Nun Massacre" looks good, too; and "The Curse of the Dead" is a great example of a retro-horror game that uses the same 3D graphics as the original "Haunted PS1 Demo Disc.
