We can add Jedi Academy to the list of bold VR transplants.

As shared by the Flat2VR (opens in new tab) modding community, creator Simon "DrBeef" Brown (opens in new tab) is in the early stages of creating a VR port of the classic FPS/lightsaber duel simulator, Jedi Academy. Or, for those in the know, Star Wars: Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Academy.

Flat2VR shared a 50-second preview gameplay clip of Jedi Academy running on Meta Quest 2, showing off some of the game's Hoth Echo Base levels. I already like the idea of seeing the film's iconic locations (and levels I played over and over again in grade school) from this new perspective, and the shooter combat seems to translate well.

Using the lightsaber reverts to the third-person perspective carried over from the base game. This perspective may be a bit risky for the odd gamer, but it seems viable; according to Flat2VR, Brown is planning a first-person lightsaber view; his previous game, "Jedi Outcast," which runs on the same engine as "Academy," offered this option. It seems like a feasible technique, since it was available in the previous "Jedi Outcast", which runs on the same engine as "Academy".

This is not Brown's first rodeo when it comes to VR ports of retro PC games. His SideQuest (opens in new tab) profile lists VR ports of Quake, Half-Life 1, Return to Castle Woflenstein, and more. Brown's completed Jedi Academy project will be found here in the near future, but if you want to follow the development or be one of the first to try it out, check out his Patreon (opens in new tab).
