Alma 3 goes to Vietnam.

PC gaming's largest military sandbox will soon be expanded with new paid DLC "S.O.G. Prairie Fire" focusing on the Vietnam War.

The $23 (€23/£20) DLC includes weapons specific to this era ("pistols, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers ...... and deadly grenades, traps, and other special items") will be added in large numbers, as well as more than 50 vehicles from the period, including "armed helicopters, gunboats, light tanks, cars, trucks, static weapons, one jet, five small boats, and two bicycles," Bohemia Interactive stated.

Perhaps most interesting to Arma players is the new terrain, Cam Lao Nam, a fictional 300 km2 piece of land that "represents the entire Vietnam War theater of operations, including the Ho Chi Minh Trail from North Vietnam through neighboring Laos and Cambodia to South Vietnam." Given this, it seems that the map attempts to condense the distinct features of the region into one continuous playspace; the Arma map itself is a great addition to the game, and it will be interesting to see how this map sets the stage for the jungle battles that are so often remembered from the Vietnam War!

Vietnam side.

While there are two separate playable factions on the Vietnamese side, the ARVN and the PAVN, the co-op multiplayer campaign focuses on the American MACV-SOG Special Forces. Six missions will be included, including "missions showcasing jungle combat from both MACV and PAVN perspectives," along with nine other multiplayer scenarios and five single-player scenarios.

The entire production is being handled by Savage Game Design, a small studio in the U.K. Bohemia Interactive has been working on this Creator DLC, which began with 2019's "Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany" As part of the program, the company continues to collaborate with third-party developers, and Bohemia says the DLC has sold 130,000 copies.Bohemia has a history of appreciating community-created content, and with programs like the Make Arma Not War program, which also awards prizes to modders and developers in an effort to discover the next Battle Royale and DayZ, two breakthrough projects that began as Arma mods.

Rising Storm 2: Vietnam is the only recent multiplayer shooter to deal with conflict, throwing players into asymmetrical combat with inventive elements such as tunnels accessible only to those on the Vietcong side Arma has always, more of a toy box than a dramatic setting for scripted storytelling, and it will be interesting to see how third-party studios interpret one of the most horrific wars of the last century, a conflict that claimed an estimated 627,000 civilian lives.

According to Bohemia, a small closed beta test will be conducted within the next two weeks for select members of the Arma 3 community "to ensure an optimal launch" of this DLC. The full contents of S.O.G. Prairie Fire are at arma3.com Please check back.
