General
Samsung's new "G9" monitor, the first gaming monitor to support 2000-nit HDR, is being promoted in stores.

A listing on Chinese retail site Taobao may show an upgraded model of Samsung's flagship Odyssey G9 monitor, featuring a Quantum MiniLED panel, which will be available in the coming months. This new model with a Quantum MiniLED panel is expected to be available in the next few months. It is as bright as the surface of the sun.

The newly listed Odyssey G9 features a curved 49" VA MiniLED panel with a resolution of 5120 x 1440 and a fast 240 Hz refresh rate; it supports G-Sync and FreeSync, the same as the 2020 model; it also has a new, more compact, and more powerful display with a new, more powerful display. The big upgrade comes in the form of Display HDR 2000 support; Display HDR 2000 is Samsung's brand name for panels capable of achieving at least 2000 nits of brightness. To support the industry standard HDR10, a display must be able to output 1000 nits. The current G9 model has reached that threshold. The upcoming G9 is, to our knowledge, the first PC monitor to achieve 2000 nits.

In terms of peak brightness, 2,000 nits is like "bat signals filling the night sky." Brightness is important for HDR because it allows the screen to display a higher dynamic range (the difference between the darkest and brightest parts of a scene). content, the G9 does not need to be close to its maximum brightness. However, this maximum brightness means that it can be comfortably played in almost any lighting condition without any problems.

The 2020 model was already blisteringly bright at 1000 nits, so doubling that seems like a pretty big leap for a monitor that sits just a couple feet away. Another notable upgrade is that the 2021 models feature 2048-zone local dimming. The same backlighting technology is commonly used in huge high-end TVs. [The monitor is currently priced at RMB 29,999 (about US$4,600) and will be available in Asia in June. No word yet on availability in North America or Europe. When we contacted Samsung about this listing, they said they had nothing to share at this time regarding news about the monitor.
