Guild Wars" Player Discovers Sword Hidden in Game for Eight Years

After remaining hidden for eight years in the original Guild Wars, the blade was finally discovered earlier this week by an inquisitive fan.

Silver Edge, the blade named after one of the game's Wiki contributors, would likely have remained undiscovered without a teaser from former ArenaNet developer Matthew Moore. Last week, Moore responded to a call for interesting Easter eggs by former Vlambeer developer JW Nijman by releasing one of his own Easter eggs, as well as a clue fragment that gives players a long-awaited starting point.

The seeds of this secret were planted a little earlier, when an anonymous wiki contributor claimed last August to have "heard from former developers" about a mystery related to the lightning-quick archivist NPC. It was further confirmed that they were indeed onto something, and with the first signs down, players quickly set to work tracking down this secret.

Much of their progress was documented in a Reddit thread, and while trying not to spoil too many surprises, Moore would occasionally comment (no, not about the frogs) to point MMO detectives in the right direction. But even when he reached out to a fellow former developer to ask his opinion on the puzzle, the item was likely completely broken after nearly a decade of updates.

"It's eight years old, unmonitored, unmaintained content," Moore admitted in his Wiki post. 'It will probably work. But even if you could assemble the proper steps to perform this magic trick, it might not work.

Thankfully, this Easter egg still works and was discovered yesterday by redditor Evaziel. After triggering a few conditions (Fortune Of The Gods and Lucky Aura), Evaziel ate a cupcake (yum!) in front of an NPC named Kilroy in Lake Drakkar ) and used an ability called Light Of Deldrimor. Its effect summons a Silver Vaettia, which, when killed, drops a long-hidden sword.

The sword itself is not particularly special. It looks the same as more easily obtained blades, and its status is modest. However, it exists as a trophy for community research skills, effectively immortalizing the name of a single wiki contributor in the game.

In other words, it took the community less than three days from the time they discovered the sword's existence to the time they acquired it. It is an amazingly fast process. Moore admits, however, that "knowing what [he] knows now about puzzle design," he might have been able to make this puzzle a little better, or at least not have let it lie dormant in silence for nearly a decade.
